Monarchs Win Close Call Over Otterbein 58-57
Senior Courtney Bissette scored 11 points with five rebounds to lead the team

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Methodist women's basketball team trailed Otterbein by as many as 12 in the first half, but the Monarchs kept their composure and came back for the 58-57 win. Methodist has gone undefeated in the Cross Creek InnKeeper Turkey Shootout for the past two years. The Monarchs improve to 3-1 on the season while Otterbein drops to 1-3.

The Otterbein Cardinals came out fast to take an early lead over Methodist. The Monarchs started shooting just 4-for-17 from the field to trail 22-10 through the first 11 and a half minutes. Methodist used free throws to get their offense going and came back to take a 25-24 lead with 2:24 to go in the half on a jumper from freshman Adriana Wilson. The Cardinals regained the lead on two free throws from Katy Miller, but with the clock expiring, senior Courtney Bissette hit an off balance 3-pointer to take a 28-26 lead into the locker room at half.

Methodist maintained their lead early in the second half, but Otterbein's Laura Roth hit a 3-pointer with 10:26 on the clock to take a 40-39 lead. The Monarchs kept it close and junior Kristen Whitehurst gave Methodist the lead on a layup with a little over six minutes to go in the game. The two teams exchanged points before junior Zan Messer hit a 3-pointer to give Methodist a four point lead. The Cardinals tied the game at 52 on free throws but Methodist senior Chesale Hester went inside on the assist from Harris for the two point lead. Roth hit her fourth three of the day for the lead, but the Monarchs countered with a layup from junior Dezzire Gilliard. Roth drove inside for a layup for the 57-56 lead with just 47 seconds on the clock. Methodist turned the ball over, but when they pressed Otterbein in the final seconds, the Cardinals threw the ball away with Harris picking it up and driving the length of the court for a layup and the 58-57 lead. Otterbein would have 14 seconds for one more opportunity, but Harris blocked the shot as the horn sounded to signal the end of the game.

The Monarchs were out rebounded 39-31, but shot 81.3% from the free throw line in the game. Bissette finished with 11 points while Whitehurst scored 10. Gilliard scored nine with Harris and Messer each finishing with eight.

In the first game of the day, Piedmont defeated Ferrum 82-69.
