January 18, 2007 The scoring started slowly for both teams as the officials called the game tight, slowing both teams' momentum. The Peace Pacers held an early lead before senior Stacy Williams went in for the layup to tie the game at eight with 15:39 left in the first half. Peace tied it again at 10, before the Monarchs responded with a fast break layup by Williams to take the lead for good with less than thirteen minutes on the clock. The Monarchs hit five 3-pointers in the first half, with four of them coming in the final three minutes of the half to take an 11 point lead into the locker room at halftime. The Pacers came within five early in the second half, but Methodist responded with two more 3-pointers by junior Courtney Bissette to give her five for the game. The post players dominated the paint in the second half with 22 points to the Pacers' eight. Sophomore Chelsale Hester found Williams under the basket for a layup before junior Ashley Harris dished one off to Hester later in the half. With less then 12 minutes in the game, freshman Michaela Myers stole the ball, drove down the court to score a layup, and hit the free throw after she was fouled on the attempt. Five minutes later, Hester scored her own three-point play after being fouled on the way to the basket. Five players scored in double figures with a season-high 58.3 percent field goal percentage for the game. Bissette led the team with 19 points and seven assists, while Williams had 14 points and Hester added 12 points with seven rebounds. Sophomore Kristen Whitehurst also scored 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field. The Monarchs will travel to Bennett College on Saturday to play at 2 pm. |
