November 24, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - It took the Methodist women's basketball some time to get their offense going, but after taking an 11-9 lead with 11:19 to go in the first half, the Monarchs maintained the advantage to win 59-54. Methodist improves to 2-1 overall this season while Piedmont moves to 3-1. Piedmont started out strong hitting their first shot of the game and went on to take an early 6-0 lead. Junior Kristen Whitehurst put the Monarchs on the board with a layup three minutes into the game. Methodist kept battling and junior Dezzire Gilliard hit a jumper to give the Monarchs an 11-9 lead. Methodist led by as many as seven during the first half and took a 32-28 lead into the locker room at halftime after a layup from freshman Adriana Wilson with four seconds on the clock. Both teams scored early in the second half, but Methodist started to edge away with senior Chelsale Hester boosting the lead to 13 on a layup off the assist from senior Ashley Harris on a fast break with less than nine minutes to go in the game. Piedmont kept fighting with a layup from Kayla Duncan cutting the Methodist lead to just three with 51 seconds left. Hester scored another layup with 32 seconds on the clock for a five point cushion with a steal by Gilliard and a block from Hester finishing the 59-54 win for the Monarchs. The Monarchs shot 47 percent from the field in the game, but it was their rebounding that kept the team alive. Methodist out rebounded Piedmont 41-31. Harris led Methodist with 20 points while Hester finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds. The Methodist Cross Creek InnKeeper Turkey Shootout will conclude on Sunday with Ferrum and Piedmont facing off at 2 pm and Methodist hosting Otterbein at 4 pm. In the first game of the day, Otterbein defeated Ferrum 77-72. |
