January 28, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs came back from a tough loss on Saturday to defeat Shenandoah 81-66. Neither team led by more than 8 until the final five minutes when the Lady Monarchs broke away and close out the win. Methodist moves to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the USA South while Shenandoah stands at 11-6 this season and 4-3 in the conference. Coming into this weekend's games, senior Stacy Williams needed 30 points to surpass 1,000 for her career. After scoring 27 against Christopher Newport on Saturday, Williams only needed three and scored her 1,000th and 1,001st points with a layup at the 16:45 mark in the first half. Late in the first half, Shenandoah Hornets player Cassie Womack pulled in her 1,000 career rebound to add to the milestones for the day. With less than ten minutes in the half, Williams drove in for another layup giving the Monarchs a 17-15 lead. Methodist extended their lead to seven before Shenandoah responded with a 3-pointer by Alicia Sanders and a jumper by Stephanie Harrold to move within two points. Both teams exchanged baskets before they closed out the half with the Lady Monarchs leading 38-36. During the second half, the score remained close with five ties and four lead changes. Methodist took the lead for good on two free throws by sophomore Kristen Whitehurst and continued to extend their lead during the final eleven minutes. Williams finished with 25 points to average 26 this weekend while Whitehurst finished with 16 points. Senior Antionett Holliday registered her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and junior Courtney Bissette dished out a game-high eight assists. With the win, the Monarchs slide into a tie for fourth place in the USA South with two big games this week against Greensboro and Ferrum who are tied for first. The Lady Monarchs will travel to Greensboro to face the Pride at 5:30 on Wednesday. |
