![]() More last second dramatics as Lady Monarchs edge Shenandoah 63-62 Jackson nails game-winner for Methodist with three seconds remaining WINCHESTER, Va. – For the second time in the last four days, the Methodist Lady Monarchs prevailed on a thrilling last-second shot. On Thursday, it was Doris Richards who provided the heroics with a buzzer-beater against Meredith. On Sunday, it was Lisa Jackson’s turn for the Lady Monarchs at Shenandoah. Jackson, a sophomore guard, drained a jump shot with three seconds left as the Lady Monarchs pulled off a 63-62 stunner over Shenandoah in a key USA South Athletic Conference showdown at Shingleton Gymnasium. The victory was the third in the last four games for Methodist (9-8, 4-3 USA South). Methodist led by 10 points 49-39 with 10:52 remaining in the game when Shenandoah answered with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes. The Hornets got two baskets from Cassie Womack, and then Netagia Foreman’s lay-up gave Shenandoah a 53-51 lead with 7:15 remaining. Shenandoah extended the lead to four points before Methodist rallied to tie. Ashley Harris and Zan Messer each converted free throws, and then Antionett Holliday’s lay-up off a Hornet turnover evened the game 59-59 with 2:17 remaining. However, Shenandoah countered with a lay-up by Foreman and Womack’s free throw gave the Hornets a 62-59 lead with 51 seconds remaining. Stacy Williams scored on a lay-up trim the deficit to one for the Lady Monarchs. On the ensuing possession, Williams stole the ball from Shenandoah’s Alicia Sanders and fed Jackson for the game-winner with three seconds remaining. Holliday paced a balanced Methodist attack with a double-double – 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Courtney Bissette also scored 10 points for Methodist. Jackson scored nine points and Ann Forsberg and Kristen Whitehurst each added eight points. For Shenandoah (6-10, 2-5), Womack recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Valerie Samples scored 12 points for the Hornets. Methodist returns to the Riddle Center on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. for a USA South showdown against rival Greensboro. |
