May 16, 2008 WAVERLY, Iowa- The Methodist women's golf team earned their 21st National Championship and 11th straight on Friday afternoon at Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa. The Monarchs won the title by 37 strokes over second place De Pauw University. Sophomore Susan Martin was the third Methodist golfer to win the title in three years. Martin won the individual championship with a 294 (74-72-75-73). Senior Katie Dick had another great day with a one under par to finish in a tie for second at 297 (79-76-71-71). Freshman Paige Caldwell tied for 21st at 316 (78-81-76-81) and freshman Gretchen McLean placed 26th with a 318 (76-80-83-79). Junior Sara Dickson shot 332 (81-91-77-83) to tie for 67th. Head coach Vici Pate continues to bring in top student-athletes to Methodist University for a storied tradition of women's golf. "When the players join the program they know there’s a long tradition behind the program and they work hard to try to uphold the tradition. When they finish with a National Championship, they’re really proud of themselves," she said. |
