Methodist Earns First Win of the Season
Sophomore Andrea DiStefano scored six goals in the win

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs jumped out early against conference opponent Averett knocking off the Cougars 18-10 on Saturday.  Methodist scored the first five goals before the Averett got on the board twelve minutes into the game.   Methodist moves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the USA South while Averett falls to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Andrea DiStefano struck early for the Monarchs scoring 53 seconds into the game on an unassisted drive into the eight meter area.  DiStefano went on to score six goals in the game including one free position.  Senior Lauren McGonagle led the team with seven goals and two assists while dominating the draw controls with ten. 

With the Monarchs up 5-0, Averett scored first on a free position shot by Nikki Huffman and followed up with a goal by Vanessa Jordan to close the gap to three.  Britt scored her second goal to give the Monarchs a 6-2 lead, but Averett's Krissy Deuterman's goal with 8:52 remaining in the first half closed the gap to three.  The Monarchs responded with two goals for every Cougar goal for the remainder of the half to take a 10-5 lead at halftime.

During the second half, it was more of the Monarchs as junior Christina Layson started things off with her second and third goals of the game.  Methodist continued to build their lead throughout the half gaining a ten goal margin with seven minutes remaining on a free position goal by McGonagle.  Averett closed the game with two goals by Jordan.

Freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Cosgray came up big for the Monarchs with ten saves in the game after facing 26 shots.  Averett goalkeeper Danielle Shields made five stops on 28 shots by Methodist.

The Monarchs leave on Sunday to travel to Hilton Head, SC where they will face Misericordia on Monday and Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
