Monarchs drop 14-13 decision in Brundage debut
West scores seven goals as Methodist falls in
lacrosse season opener
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
The Methodist Monarch lacrosse team opened the
2006 season on Wednesday, and took one on the
chin with a 14-13 defeat against rival
Greensboro in USA South Athletic Conference
action. The defeat spoiled the debut of new
Methodist head coach Beth Brundage.
At the start, it looked as if it would be a
runaway for Methodist as the Monarchs jumped out
to a 6-1 lead as Lindsey West scored three goals
and Katelyn Cushman scored twice in the first 16
minutes. However, Greensboro countered with a
5-0 run as Lindsey Ferguson scored three goals
and Amanda McLaughlin’s goal in the 25th minute
tied the game 6-6.
But West gave the Monarchs a 7-6 lead at
halftime with an unassisted goal in the 28th
minute.
Greensboro took control in the second half with
a 6-1 run in the first nine minutes. Methodist
trimmed the lead to 12-10 with goals by Lauren
McGonagle and West, but Greensboro countered
with two goals by McLaughlin and Karen Hall. The
Pride sealed it with a stall offense in the
final couple of minutes.
West, a senior, scored seven goals to pace
Methodist, followed by Cushman with three goals
and two by McGonagle. Ferguson scored four goals
for Greensboro, while McLaughlin scored three
goals with four assists and Jenna Gast and
Jennifer Donah each added two goals.
Methodist plays host to NCAA Division II Belmont
Abbey on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
