February 24, 2007 GREENSBORO, NC- Methodist scored the first two goals of the game and held a 3-1 lead before Greensboro scored 14 unanswered goals. The Pride went on to win the first conference game of the season 19-7. Methodist moves to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the USA South while Greensboro starts the season 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The game started scoreless for almost five minutes before the Monarchs scored first on a goal by senior Lauren McGonagle. McGonagle fed sophomore Andrea DiStefano for the second goal of the game to take a 2-0 lead early in the first half. Greensboro countered with a goal by Jenna Gast, but McGonagle gave the Monarchs a 3-1 lead with twenty minutes remaining in the half. The Pride began to take control scoring ten goals to close out the half with a 11-3 lead. Greensboro opened the second half with three more goals. The Pride's pressure defense stifled the Monarchs' scoring until McGonagle found junior Christina Layson for a goal with 20:48 to go in the game. McGonagle scored her third goal of the game eleven minutes later before feeding Layson for the Monarchs' sixth goal. Greensboro scored again, but Methodist sophomore Kelsie Britt capped off the Monarchs' scoring with a goal on a free position attempt. Freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Cosgray finished with eight saves for the Monarchs while Greensboro goalkeeper Kristen McGuire made four stops. The Monarchs will host Averett University on Saturday at 1 pm. |
