March 13, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Methodist lacrosse team jumped out early, but Lees-McRae tied the game 4-4 at halftime before the Monarchs outscored the Bobcats 9-2 in the second half for the win. Methodist improves to 3-4 overall while NCAA Division-II Lees-McRae falls to 0-7. Methodist scored first when junior Christina Layson fed senior Lauren McGonagle in the sixth minute of the game. Sophomore Kelsie Britt followed up with a crease roll to take the 2-0 lead before the Bobcats got on the board in the ninth minute of play. Methodist held a 4-1 lead before Lees-McRae scored three unanswered goals during the remainder of the half to tie the game at halftime. Junior Bridget Holcomb started things off for Methodist in the second half with the feed from McGonagle. McGonagle scored four more goals to give Methodist an 9-6 lead with 9:24 remaining in the game. Freshman Jessica Lutzow was awarded a free-position shot on the 8-meter and scored for the 10-6 lead. Holcomb, Mcgonagle, and Layson finished the scoring for the Monarchs while the defense held Lees-McRae scoreless over the final ten minutes of play. Sophomore Andrea DiStefano stepped in goal today and came up with 11 saves to preserve the win. DiStefano was also aggressive outside of the crease picking up five ground balls with two caused turnovers. The Monarchs will be back on Saturday to host Lynchburg at 1 pm. |
