April 6, 2008 CHARLOTTE, NC— The Monarchs held an early lead in the first half and tied the game on two different occasions in the second half, but Lees-McRae held on for the 24-18 win. Methodist drops to 3-9 overall while Lees-McRae is 1-11 this season. Methodist opened the scoring with a goal from junior Andrea DiStefano off the crease roll before Lees-McRae's Desiree Cox stole the ball and scored at the other end to tie the game. Methodist took a 5-3 lead, but the Bobcats scored the next three goals to lead 6-5 with 8:13 to go in the half. Senior Chrystal Bradley tied the game at six on a fast break, but Lees-McRae scored the final three goals of the half to lead 9-6 at the break. Both teams exchanged two goals a piece to start the second half before the Monarchs took advantage of Lees-McRae playing a player down and went on a four goal run with three from Bradley to tie the game at 12. The score was tied again at 13, but the Bobcats took over late to lead by as many as seven. DiStefano closed the scoring with a goal at the crease on the assist from Bradley. Lees-McRae finished with the 24-18 win. DiStefano led the Monarchs with seven goals while Bradley finished with six. Junior Kelsie Britt added two goals while sophomore Krystal Poirier, senior Christina Layson and junior Diane Doroftei scored one a piece. Cox paced the Bobcats with 13 goals. Sophomore Lindsey Cosgray stopped a career-high 21 saves to tie the Methodist record while Kristine Koch had 14 stops for Lees-McRae. Methodist will play at Christopher Newport on Saturday at 12 pm in their last regular season game. |
