Nine straight! Monarchs set school record for
victories in 21-4 rout
West ties school career record for goals as
Methodist whips North Carolina Wesleyan
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
The Methodist Monarch lacrosse team reached more
new heights on Tuesday as the Monarchs routed
rival North Carolina Wesleyan 21-4 in a USA
South Athletic Conference matchup at Monarch
Stadium. The triumph set a school record for
victories in a season for the Monarchs as
Methodist improved to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the
USA South.
After opening the season with two one-goal
defeats, Methodist has now won nine straight
games heading into Saturday’s big showdown at
Christopher Newport.
Not only was it a record-setting team victory
for the Monarchs, it was also a milestone game
for Lindsey West. The senior midfielder scored
six goals and tied the Methodist career record
for goals with 168. She now shares the mark with
former teammate Emily Neilsen.
Methodist wasted no time, scoring 10 of the
game’s first 11 goals in the first 22 minutes.
West scored four goals, followed by Lauren
McGonagle with three goals and Kali Rodriguez
scored twice in the rally. Bridget Holcomb’s
goal with seven seconds remaining gave the
Monarchs a commanding 13-2 lead at halftime.
West and McGonagle each scored twice in the
second half as the Monarchs stretched the lead
to 20-2.
In addition to West, McGonagle also scored six
goals, while Holcomb scored four goals and
Rodriguez scored twice for the Monarchs. Buffy
Castro scored twice for the Bishops (2-8, 1-3).
Methodist plays at Christopher Newport at 1 p.m.
on Saturday.
