February 24, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.— The Monarchs opened their USA South Conference play with a 19-3 win over Shenandoah. Shenandoah tied the game at one early, but the Monarchs took over for thir first victory of the season. Methodist moves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the USA South while Shenandoah starts their season 0-1. Just a minute and 12 seconds into the game, junior Andrea DiStefano put the Monarchs on the board with a goal on the assist from junior Ann Ferrara. Shenandoah's Sara Mucciaro countered with a goal a minute later, but the Monarchs scored the next 12 goals to take a 13-1 lead. The Hornets added a goal with 3:48 to go in the half, but Methodist held a 13-2 lead at halftime. DiStefano started the scoring again in the second half on an assist from senior Chrystal Bradley before Mucciaro scored for Shenandoah. The Monarchs slowed things down and added five more goals for the 19-3 win. DiStefano finished with six goals while senior Christina Layson scored four goals. Bradley scored three goals and added two assists while junior Kelsie Britt added two goals and an assist. Sophomore Krystal Poirier scored three goals while Ferrara finished with a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Cosgray made 12 saves on the Hornets 19 shots. Shenandoah goalkeeper Kelli Hughes had 16 saves for the Hornets. Methodist will play at Lynchburg on Saturday at 1 pm. |
