Monarchs Clinch Third With Win Over Shenandoah
Freshman Lindsey Cosgray records 14 saves to preserve the win for Methodist

WINCHESTER, VA- The Methodist lacrosse team finished the regular season with a 15-12 win over Shenandoah University on Monday.  The Monarchs withstood a three-goal run by the Hornets in the final five minutes to hold on for the victory.  Methodist moves to 5-9 on the season and 4-2 in the USA South while Shenandoah drops to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Sophomore Andrea DiStefano scored the first goal of the game to give Methodist the early lead, but Shenandoah rattled off five consecutive goals within fourteen minutes to take a 5-1 lead.  Methodist went more than twenty minutes without a goal, but senior Lauren McGonagle got things rolling with an unassisted goal with 9:46 to go in the half.  The Hornets countered, but DiStefano and McGonagle took turns scoring the next four goals to tie the game at six going into halftime.

Shenandoah took the early lead in the second half on a free position shot, but junior Bridget Holcomb scored the next two goals to regain the lead.  Methodist began to regain control as McGonagle scored on a free position and then fed Holcomb for the 10-7 lead.  Shenandoah closed the gap to two goals, but the Monarchs scored the next four to hold a 15-9 advantage.  Shenandoah tried to mount a comeback scoring three goals in the final five minutes but the Monarchs held on for the 15-12 win.

Freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Cosgray made 14 saves on 34 shots faced, while Shenandoah goalkeeper Wendy Taylor made nine stops for the Hornets.

The Monarchs will host the sixth seeded team in a USA South Quarterfinal game on Tuesday, April 10th at 4 pm.  North Carolina Wesleyan and Averett are tied for fifth and face each other tomorrow to determine the final tournament seeding.
