Monarchs Fall to Wooster 14-9
Junior Bridget Holcomb led the Monarchs with five goals

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The College of Wooster traveled down to Fayetteville from Ohio to open their season against the Monarchs.  Methodist held a 3-2 lead early in the first half, but the Scots battled back to lead 6-3 at halftime and went on to win 14-9.  Methodist moves to 3-6 overall while Wooster starts the season 1-0.

The Scots scored first on a goal by Annie Steward in the first minute of the game, but the Monarchs settled in and countered with a goal by junior Bridget Holcomb on the assist from senior Lauren McGonagle.  Holcomb followed up with her second goal with pressure from the Wooster goalkeeper Jamie Dannenberg to take the 2-1 lead.  Steward tied the game at two, but Holcomb was awarded a free position shot on the eight-meter and scored to regain the lead for Methodist.  Wooster went on to score four goals to close the half with a 6-3 lead.

Wooster started strong in the second half scoring the first two goals before junior Christina Layson found Holcomb on the far post for the Monarchs fourth goal.  The Scots responded with a goal by Emily Baab, but freshman Morgan Langdon received a free position shot and scored the first goal of her career with less than fifteen minutes remaining in the game.  McGonagle fed sophomore Adama Abramson to move the Monarchs to within three goals.  Wooster scored the next two, but Holcomb scored her fifth goal with eight minutes to go.  Wooster countered to take a 13-7 lead, but sophomore Andrea DiStefano and Layson both scored in the final three minutes for the Monarchs.  Wooster scored their final goal with 27 seconds left in the game to win 14-9.

The Monarchs' freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Cosgray made eight saves in the game while Dannenberg made four stops.

The Monarchs return to conference play on Wednesday at North Carolina Wesleyan at 4 pm.
