Methodist gives Brundage first victory,
defeating York 18-6
McGonagle scores five goals, Cushman scores
four for Monarchs
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
After two straight one-goal defeats to open the
2006 lacrosse season, the Methodist Monarchs
weren’t going let Wednesday’s game against
visiting York get away from them, and they
didn’t. The Monarchs gave new head coach Beth
Brundage her first collegiate victory with an
18-6 victory at Monarch Stadium.
Methodist improves to 1-2 overall on the season.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Methodist took
control with six straight goals, including three
straight by junior midfielder Lauren McGonagle.
After York scored a goal, Methodist answered
with three straight goals, including two
straight from sophomore attack Bridget Holcomb,
to take a 9-2 lead. Late goals by Lindsey West
and Katelyn Cushman gave the Monarchs an 11-4
lead at halftime.
Methodist picked up where it let off in the
second half, scoring the first six goals to take
a commanding 17-4 lead.
McGonagle paced a balanced Methodist scoring
attack with five goals, followed by Cushman with
four goals and three from Holcomb. West and Kali
Rodriguez each added two goals. Carla Thomas
scored two goals for York (1-1).
Methodist travels on Saturday for a 1 p.m.
showdown at USA South Athletic Conference rival
Averett.
