Monarchs Score
Three in the Second Half to Beat Cabrini
Cabrini responds with two but can't finish
FAYETTEVILLE, NC- After finding their
first win of the season on Saturday against
Hollins University, the Monarch women's soccer
team returned Sunday afternoon to take on the
Cabrini Cavaliers. The game was scoreless
at halftime but both teams found their offense
to rally in the second half. Methodist
moves to 2-0 with the victory.
Cabrini started off strong, putting on the
pressure with all 7 of their first half shots
taken in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Once things settled down, Methodist found their
rhythm and tried to push the ball forward.
Finally, in the 23rd minute, freshman Ashley
Kolano took Methodist's first shot, but it was
saved by Cabrini goalkeeper Lea Conti.
Four minutes into the second half, junior Marie
Finley shot a ball from 40 yards out towards the
Cabrini goal that floated in over Conti's head
to give the Monarchs the 1-0 lead. Ten
minutes later, freshman Whitney Roberson
dribbled through the defense to strike the lower
left corner. In the 61st minute Cabrini
committed a foul in the box, creating an
opportunity for freshman Melissa Linn to hit the
eventual game-winner off of a penalty kick.
Cabrini tried to respond with goals in the 63rd
and 74th minutes, but the Methodist defense was
able to maintain their position and stop the
pressure. Goalkeepers Amanda Evans and
Erin Swanson shared time to preserve the win.
The Monarchs will
travel to play Guilford on Wednesday at 4 pm
before returning home to face St. Mary's College
of Maryland on Saturday at 12 pm.
