NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s soccer team’s hopes of a USA South Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Division III National Tournament berth were dashed on Saturday as Methodist fell 7-1 at Christopher Newport in the USA South Tournament championship game.

Making it to the title game for the second straight year, Methodist ends its season at 9-11-1.

Christopher Newport (14-4-1) dominated from the start, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes. Leah Leavitt scored the first Captain goal in the second minute off an assist by Hillary Carney. That was followed by Emily Renkin’s goal in the sixth minute off assists by Paniz Asgari and Ashleigh Dota.

The scored stayed 2-0 until the 36th minute when Ashley Welner scored unassisted to give Christopher Newport a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The Captains wasted little time at the start of the second half as Asgari scored in the 46th minute off an assist by Amanda Peters, followed by Renkin’s unassisted goal in the 49th minute. The remaining Christopher Newport goals came from Welner in the 59th minute and from Asgari in the 78th minute.

Methodist’s lone goal was unassisted by Marie Finley in the 62nd minute. Methodist goalkeeper Amanda Evans recorded four saves. Finley, Chrystal Bradley and Danielle Nourie were selected to the All-Tournament team for the Lady Monarchs.
