Championship bound! Lady Monarchs advance with 1-0 shutout thriller over Greensboro

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
What had been a frustrating season for the Methodist Lady Monarch soccer team has been all forgotten thanks to another successful run in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

Fresh off opening the 2005 USA South Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Ferrum on Tuesday, Methodist took it a step further on Friday with a 1-0 shutout victory over Greensboro at Christopher Newport. The victory pushes Methodist (9-10-1) into the USA South Tournament championship game for the second straight season.

The Lady Monarchs, seeded third in the tournament, face either North Carolina Wesleyan or Christopher Newport in the Saturday’s championship at 2 p.m. at Captains Field.

After a scoreless first half, Methodist took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute as Chrystal Bradley scored the game’s lone goal off an assist by Ashley Sloan. It was the 16th goal on the season for Bradley. Methodist had just withstood an offensive onslaught by Greensboro in which Lady Monarch goalkeeper Amanda Evans recorded two saves.

The Lady Monarchs had nine total shots and five shots on goal to only six and two for Greensboro (7-10-1).
