Women's Soccer Shuts Out Guilford 2-0
Sophomore Whitney Roberson scores second goal for the Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  In just the first shot of the game the Monarchs took the lead and secured the win late in the second half for a 2-0 victory. The win moves Methodist to 4-0 on the season, while Guilford falls to 0-5 on the year.

Neither team could manage to get a shot off until the seventh minute when Methodist freshman Hevyn Diers took a direct kick from 25 yards out and drove it to the upper left corner to give the Monarchs a one goal lead. In the 16th minute of play Guilford had a chance to even the score with a shot inside the six yard box, but the Monarchs cleared it away. Five minutes later the Quakers hit the post with a shot, but Methodist took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Monarchs maintained control in the second half out shooting Guilford 14-1. Sophomore Whitney Roberson had a breakaway opportunity in the 61st minute, but was fouled hard just over the midfield line. In the 83rd minute, Roberson capitalized on a defensive misplay and stole the ball for the insurance goal.

Freshman Kasey Nichols earned the shutout victory in goal for Methodist while Laura Carney made eight saves for Guilford.

Methodist begins a six game road trip this weekend with St. Mary's College of Maryland scheduled for Saturday at 12 pm.
