September 30, 2007 LYNCHBURG, VA- The Methodist women's soccer team traveled to non-conference opponent Lynchburg on Sunday to take on the Hornets. Coming in at 8-1, Methodist hoped to earn another regional win, but two late goals gave Lynchburg the victory. The Monarchs move to 8-2 this season while Lynchburg stands at 8-2-1 overall. After rattling off nine goals yesterday, the Methodist offense had trouble creating shots with just one opportunity in the first half compared to Lynchburg's 11. The game remained tied at halftime with neither team able to break through the defense. With less than eight minutes remaining in the game, Methodist goalkeeper Kasey Nichols came out to make the save and Lynchburg's Betsy Kwiatkowshi knocked in the deflection to take the 1-0 lead. The Monarchs tried to counter, but Kwiatkowshi secured the win with her second goal of the day. The Hornets out shot Methodist 27 to six. Nichols finished with eight saves on the day while the Hornets' keeper Jackie Bader made three stops to preserve the shutout. Methodist returns home to host Shenandoah Saturday at 2 pm and Mary Baldwin on Sunday at 2 pm. |
