Monarchs Earn Ninth Shutout in 11-0 Win
Senior Marie Finley scores two goals and notches an assist

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Monarchs rolled through another one with an 11-0 win over USA South newcomer Mary Baldwin. Methodist broke open the floodgates early and continued to dominate the run of play. The Monarchs improve to 10-2 overall this season and 5-0 in the USA South while Mary Baldwin falls to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Sophomore Whitney Roberson scored first when she took on the Squirrels' defense inside the 18-yard box for a goal in the fourth minute. Freshman Hevyn Diers took on the goalkeeper for the second goal less than three minutes later. Diers then found Roberson with a cross from the right side for Roberson to finish to the lower left corner. Senior Chrystal Bradley picked up a ball near midfield and dribbled through the defense to give Methodist the 4-0 lead. Senior Christina Layson scored on a shot to the near post inside the 18 and senior Marie Finley capped off the first half scoring with a run through the Mary Baldwin defense for the goal.

Freshman Brianna Cella scored first in the second half when sophomore Ashley Kolano found her open inside the 18. Diers hit a bomb to the upper right corner with the assist to freshman Kate Ramsay and Finley scored her second goal of the day in the 71st minute. Freshman Faye Charles scored on the assist from Finley and Ramsay scored one of her own with a break through the defense.

The Methodist defense combined with freshman goalkeepers Kasey Nichols and Emily Stratton to hold Mary Baldwin to just one shot. Stratton made a huge save late in the second half to tip Marguerite Cook's shot over the crossbar, preserving the shutout.

Methodist will take the road on Wednesday to play N.C. Wesleyan at 4 pm.
