October 30, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The top seeded Methodist women's soccer team took care of business in the first round with an 11-0 win over number eight Mary Baldwin on Tuesday. As the number one seed, the Monarchs will host the semifinals and finals this weekend for the second consecutive year. Methodist improves to 15-4 overall this season while Mary Baldwin finishes at 2-14-1. Freshman Faye Charles put the Monarchs up early with a goal in the fifth minute of play. Senior Brenda Chambers fed the ball down the line to sophomore Whitney Roberson who crossed the ball across the eighteen to find Charles. Roberson picked up her second assist on a pass to freshman Brianna Cella at the 10:40 mark. Roberson scored one of her own on an assist from sophomore Eric Nath after Nath split the defense and Roberson ran onto the pass. Freshman Emily Stratton scored on the assist from freshman Kelly Orpin. Freshman Hevyn Diers scored the fifth goal of the game on a breakaway after the pass from senior Chrystal Bradley. Diers took a corner kick in the 42nd minute. Bradley flicked it on for senior Marie Bradley to give Methodist a 6-0 lead. Senior Christina Layson scored the final goal of the half with a shot from the edge of the eighteen with just ten seconds remaining. In the second half, Diers scored her second goal on the assist from sophomore Ashley Kolano and Cella. Kolano scored in the 54th minute on the near post shot with the assist from Cella. Freshman Kasey Nichols scored on the assist from Layson and Diers capped things off with her third goal of the game on a breakaway. The Monarchs will host Meredith on Friday at 2:30 pm. The USA South Women's Soccer Tournament website will be released Wednesday. |
