Lady Monarchs, North Carolina Wesleyan battle to 2-2 tie

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
In one of its most physical games played this season, the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s soccer team battled to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday against visiting USA South Athletic Conference rival North Carolina Wesleyan at Monarch Soccerplex. The draw puts Methodist 3-9-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the USA South.

The game was plagued by penalties, as a combined 63 fouls were called on both teams. In addition, each team also was issued a yellow card.

North Carolina Wesleyan scored the only goal in the first half. Tori Tenner scored on a slide kick in front of the Methodist goal off a cross pass from Reva McCloud in the 23rd minute.

However, Methodist answered early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Chrystal Bradley took a long pass from Ashley Sloan, outraced the Bishops’ Mayra Gomez and hammered home the goal from 13 yards out from the left side of the penalty box.

The score stayed tied until the 78th minute when North Carolina Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead on a goal in traffic by Buffy Casto. But Methodist answered two minutes later with the equalizer on a 35-yard direct kick goal by Marie Finley.

Neither team was able to get the game-winner in the two overtime periods. Methodist goalkeeper Amanda Evans and North Carolina Wesleyan goalkeeper Bryanne Godfrey each recorded five saves.
