Piedmont cashes in on opportunities in 5-3 victory over Lady Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
Cashing in on scoring opportunities proved to be the difference in Saturday’s women’s soccer showdown between Methodist and Piedmont. In the end, it was visiting Piedmont that cashed in as the Lions knocked off Methodist 5-3 at Monarch Soccerplex. The defeat drops Methodist to 3-6 overall on the 2005 season.

Although Methodist stayed on the attack in the first half, Piedmont converted three chances in the first half. Bergdis Gudnadottir, who recorded a hat-trick for the Lions, scored the first Piedmont goal on a 20-yard strike from the top of the penalty box in the 16th minute. After Methodist tied the game on Chrystal Bradley’s penalty kick, Piedmont struck again with a goal by Haley Boyce in the 23rd minute, followed by Gudnadottir’s second goal in the 28th minute.

Methodist trimmed the deficit to 3-2 at halftime on Brenda Chambers’ goal in the 41st minute on a corner kick.

Piedmont responded again in the second half. Gudnadottir scored her third goal in the 56 minute, followed by another Boyce goal in the 65th minute to increase the Lion lead to 5-2. The closest Methodist would cut the deficit was on Bradley’s second goal in the 80th minute.

Methodist travels to UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
