1-0 in
overtime
defensive
thriller
FAYETTEVILLE,
N.C. –
Defense
was the
name of
the game
in
Sunday’s
contest
between
Methodist
and
Rhodes
in the
2005
InnKeeper/Methodist
Invitational.
However,
Rhodes
cashed
in
overtime
with a
last
second
goal to
edge
Methodist
1-0 at
Monarch
Soccerplex.
The
defeat
was the
first of
the
season
for the
Lady
Monarchs
(2-1).
The two
teams
played
toe-to-toe
for most
of the
overtime
period
before
Rhodes
had a
corner
kick
opportunity
with 20
seconds
remaining.
The ball
was sent
to the
center
of the
penalty
box, and
after a
scramble,
the
Lynx’s
Katy
Buckner
scored
the
game-winner
with 11
seconds
remaining.
Methodist
played
mostly a
defensive
second
half as
Rhodes
constantly
stayed
on the
attack.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Amanda
Evans,
however,
had six
saves,
including
two on
breakaway
opportunities
for the
Lynx.
The Lady
Monarchs
appeared
to have
one
final
breakaway
in the
waning
seconds
as
Chrystal
Bradley
stole
the ball
near the
penalty
box and
took it
in for a
possible
goal.
But
Rhodes
goalkeeper
Allie
Kotula
made a
diving
kick
save
with 15
seconds
remaining
in
regulation.
Methodist
is back
at home
on
Wednesday,
playing
host to
in-state
rival
Guilford
