Methodist Shuts Out Shenandoah 6-0
Freshman Brianna Cella scores the game winner

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Methodist women's soccer team hosted the Shenandoah Hornets on Saturday in what started slow, but finished a 6-0 win for the Monarchs. Methodist dominated the possession as Shenandoah played short staffed throughout the entire game. The Monarchs improve to 9-2 overall this season and 4-0 in the USA South while Shenandoah drops to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

The Monarchs first 18 shots of the game could not find the back of the net, but sophomore Whitney Roberson crossed a ball from the right side to find freshman Brianna Cella inside the six-yard box for the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute. Freshman Hevyn Diers scored on a hard driven ball from outside of the 18 to give Methodist a 2-0 lead. The Monarchs had another opportunity late in the first half, but the referees ruled the ball did not completely cross the goal line.

In the second half, sophomore Tina Varnell scored first after a defensive clear popped out and she beat the keeper in the upper right corner. Diers scored again on the assist from sophomore Ashley Kolano and freshman Amber Jurkovac scored her first goal of the year at the 65 minute mark. Roberson got on the board with a shot that beat the goalkeeper far post giving Kolano her second assist of the day.

The Monarchs out shot the Hornets 73-3. Samantha LoPreto and Kaitlin Naill combined in goal for Shenandoah to make 31 saves. Freshmen Emily Stratton and Kasey Nichols split time in goal for Methodist with Nichols making one stop on a breakaway opportunity for Shenandoah.

Methodist will be back in action Sunday at 2 pm hosting Mary Baldwin.
