October 21, 2006 It took the Monarchs some time to knock the ball around and get their offense going, but junior Brenda Chambers started the scoring after she received a cross from junior Teresa Futrell and slotted it home. Less than a minute later freshman Michelle Anderson received a ball from junior Chrystal Bradley to beat the keeper inside the box. Chambers scored her second goal of the game with 9 minutes remaining in the first half. Bradley earned the assist on Chambers' long ball that looped over the Shenandoah goalkeeper's hands. With the Monarchs up 3-0 at halftime, they came back out in the second half to cushion their lead with four more goals. Anderson had a goal on a header from the near post when freshman Erica Nath crossed one inside before Bradley got one of her own on a rebound off of an Anderson shot. Bradley scored her second goal when she headed home senior Ashley Sloan's corner kick. Anderson scored her third, and the game's final goal of the game when Sloan found her inside the box to score. Seniors Ashley Sloan, Jamie Oakes and Elyse Myers were honored before the game for their four years of Monarch soccer. The seniors arrived in August 2003, just three freshmen amongst nine ready to make an impact. The only three to play all four years, the trio has combined to play in 177 games, scoring 11 goals and notching 25 assists. After helping to earn the women's soccer team's first conference championship in 8 years as freshmen, they have returned to the top as seniors, ranked number one in the USA South. The Monarchs will host Lynchburg College on Tuesday at 3 pm. |
