Lady Monarchs end winless streak with thrilling 2-1 victory over York

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
Perhaps this was what the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s soccer needed as a jumpstart to finishing its season on a strong note.

Staring a five-game winless streak in the face, the Lady Monarchs pulled off a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting York on Saturday at Monarch Soccerplex. The victory improves Methodist to 4-9-1 overall.

Methodist drew first blood in the 10th minute when Chrystal Bradley took a direct kick from Marie Finley inside the penalty box and scored to give Methodist a 1-0 lead. That scored stayed the same for the rest of the first half and into the early second half when York scored the equalizer on a header by Maura Duginan off an assist by Jill Stanley.

However, Janie Trovato scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for Methodist in the 59th minute off an assist by Danielle Nourie. Down the stretch, the Lady Monarchs fended off 10 York shot attempts to preserve the victory.

Methodist goalkeeper Amanda Evans recorded seven saves in the victory.

Methodist returns to USA South Athletic Conference action on Saturday (Oct. 22) at Shenandoah at 1 p.m.
