Women's Tennis Clinches USA South Championship
Monarchs earned seventh title in eight years

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Methodist women's tennis team hosted USA South rival Christopher Newport on Saturday in what would determine the regular season conference champion. The Monarchs opened with a 2-1 lead after doubles and went on to win 7-2 to break the Captains 17 match winning streak. Methodist moves to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in the USA South while Christopher Newport is 17-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference this season.

Seniors Tiffany Tucker and Jenny Smith combined to win the first point for Methodist in an 8-3 win at number one doubles. Senior Lauren Hulse and junior Shannon Vivian pulled away in what was a close match early on to win 8-4 at number three. Senior Leighton Bull and freshman Kaitlin Flaherty were down 5-2 early before coming back to take the 7-6 lead. The match was tied at eight before Christopher Newport took the 9-8 lead and won 7-5 in the tiebreaker.

The Monarchs used the momentum from their lead through doubles to take control early in the singles matches. Tucker finished first with a 6-3, 6-0 win at number one. Vivian won 6-1, 6-1 at number four while Smith finished 6-3, 6-1 at number three around the same time sophomore Lindsey Davis took the 6-2, 6-2 win at number six with both matches confirming the victory for Methodist. Bull won 7-5, 6-1 at number five for the Monarchs. Flahety battled back and won a second set after dropping the first but the Captains' Frannie Shivar won 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.

Prior to the match, members of the Methodist women's basketball team presented money raised by the entire Methodist athletic department to Victoria Thomas of the Cape Fear Valley Breast Cancer Center in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Day for women's tennis.

The Monarchs will travel to Burlington for the USA South Tournament Apr. 18-20.
