Monarchs Shutout Chowan Before Falling to #6 Mary Washington
Senior Jenny Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles

MURFREESBORO, NC-  The Monarchs hit the road on Saturday traveling to Chowan and Mary Washington. Methodist knocked off Chowan with a 9-0 shutout victory before falling 0-9 to nationally ranked Mary Washington. Methodist moves to 2-1 this season while Chowan is 0-1 and Mary Washington is 2-0 thus far.

The Monarchs made things look easy at Chowan starting with senior Tiffany Tucker winning 6-1, 6-1 at number one singles. Senior Jenny Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at number two and junior Shannon Vivian took the number three match at 6-0, 6-0. At number four senior Sara Seiling won 6-0, 6-0 and freshman Heather Ford won 6-0 at number five singles. Junior Cameron Tinkham wrapped up singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number six.

Doubles went smoothly as well with freshman Kaitlin Flaherty and senior Leighton Bull teaming up at number one for the 8-1 win. Senior Lauren Hulse and junior Courtney Vail won at 8-0 at number two and Seiling and sophomore Lindsey Davis won 8-0 at number three to finish off the 9-0 win.

Methodist then traveled indoors to take on sixth ranked Mary Washington. Tucker and Smith lost 8-1 at number one doubles while Bull and Flaherty fought to a tough 8-6 loss at number two. Vivian and Hulse combined to lose 8-1 at number three.

Tucker lost 7-6, 6-2 at number one singles to regionally ranked Stephanie Kurti. Flaherty lost 6-1, 6-1 to another regionally ranked opponent, Courtney Goimarac while Smith fell 6-0, 6-2 to Natalia Fugate. Vivian lost 6-3, 6-3 at number four and Davis lost 6-0, 6-1 at number five. Vail lost 6-3, 6-1 at number six.

The Monarchs will host Maryville on Saturday in their first home match at 11 am.
