May 2, 2008 FREDERICKSBURG, VA- For the second year in a row, the Methodist women's tennis team opened the NCAA Tournament with a win. The Monarchs knocked off Elizabethtown 5-1 on Friday afternoon after taking a 3-0 lead through doubles and securing two singles wins in order to put the match out of reach for Elizabethtown. Seniors Tiffany Tucker and Jenny Smith won 8-1 at number one doubles and senior Lauren Hulse combined with junior Shannon Vivian to win 8-1 at number three doubles. Senior Leighton Bull and freshman Kaitlin Flaherty earned an 8-3 win at number two. In singles play, the match was decided after wins from Tucker at number one and Flaherty at number two. Tucker won in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 while Flaherty prevailed 6-4, 6-4. Elizabethtown got on the board with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Smith at number three. Vivian dropped the first set but was leading in the second set 6-7, 5-6. Bull split the first two sets at number five but held the lead in the third for a 6-2, 3-6, 4-1 score. Sophomore Lindsey Davis was ahead 7-6, 4-0 at number six. With the win, the Monarchs will face host Mary Washington on Saturday at 1 pm.
