February 9, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Methodist women's tennis team opened their spring season with a dominating 9-0 shutout of nearby Fayetteville State University. Methodist opens the season at 1-0 while Fayetteville State starts 0-1. Things started off strong with three wins at doubles. Seniors Tiffany Tucker and Jenny Smith won 8-2 at number one while senior Leighton Bull and freshman Kaitlin Flaherty combined to win 8-1 at number two. Senior Lauren Hulse and junior Shannon Vivian picked up the 8-2 victory at number three. Tucker had the toughest singles match taking on Ines Nieves. Tucker won the first set 6-1 before Nieves came back and won the second. Tucker sealed the match with a 6-3 third set. Flaherty won a commanding 6-0, 6-0 match at number two while Smith won 6-1, 6-1 at number three. Vivian played number four singles and won 6-4, 6-0 while sophomore Lindsey Davis won 6-1, 6-2 at number five. Junior Courtney Vail wrapped things up with a 6-2, 6-2 win at number six. The Monarchs will take the road next weekend to play at Chowan and Mary Washington on Saturday. |
