Monarchs Compete at ITA Regionals

ATLANTA, GA-  The Methodist women's tennis team spent the weekend at Emory University competing in the Fall Wilson/ITA Southern Championships. Emory claimed top honors, but the Monarchs showed well in the tournament.

In the singles competition, senior Tiffany Tucker defeated Danielle Hannah (Spelman) 8-0 in her first match and pushed the top seed Gab Carvalho of Sewanee before falling 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Kaitlin Flaherty won three matches before Carvalho won 6-0, 6-1. Senior Jenny Smith won her first match 8-2 over Amanda Thomley of Huntingdon 8-2 before losing to Allison Zakaras of Millsaps in three sets. Juniors Courtney Vail and Shannon Vivian lost in their first singles match but moved to the consolation draw where Vivian won two matches over Claire Cox (Mississipi) and Amanda Chaffin (Agnes Scott). Vivian lost 9-7 to seventh seeded Kathryn Carroll (Birmingham Southern) in the consolation championship.

The Methodist doubles teams lost in their first match of the draw, but moved on to the consolation matches. Vail and Flaherty combined to win two their consolation championship over Prescott/West of Huntingdon 8-3. Tucker and Smith also won two doubles matches to secure the consolation championship.

The women will host the Methodist University Invitational Oct. 5-7.
