Twelve Methodist athletes named to all-tournament teams
Jessica Hutzul named softball MVP; Adam Horton men's golf medalist

BURLINGTON, NC-  Twelve Methodist athletes earned recognition on USA South All-Tournament teams this past weekend at the Spring Sports Festival in Burlington, NC.  Adam Horton led his golf team to the Conference title shooting a 145 winning the medalist honors.  Pitcher Jessica Hutzul led the 38-6 Monarchs to the Tournament championship and was named the Most Valuable Player. release

Methodist competes for six tournament championships in first ever Spring Sports Festival
Softball and Men's Golf teams win titles; Tennis teams fall in finals

BURLINGTON, NC- Methodist College entered the first ever USA South Spring Sports festival this past weekend in Burlington, North Carolina with the high hopes of going six for six.  That is, winning conference tournament championships in all six spring sports- baseball, softball, lacrosse, men's golf, and men's and women's tennis- offered by the USA South

Four Monarchs named All-Conference;  Coach Barragan named Coach of the Year
Jenny Smith and Tiffany Tucker named to the first team
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its
All-Conference awards for women's tennis.  Methodist College head coach Francie Barragan was named the 2006 Coach of the Year.  Barragan in her first year at the helm of the Monarchs has been tabbed the Coach of the Year. She led the Monarchs to the regular season title with a record of 13-5 overall and 7-0 in conference action. release

Methodist enters USA South Tournament as the #1 seed
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Fresh off the heels of winning their sixth straight conference championship, the Methodist Women's Tennis team needed some good competition going into next weekends USA South Conference Tournament.  They got that and more at Mary Washington on Saturday and Elizabethtown on Sunday. release

Monarchs cruise by Peace- Capture sixth straight USA South title
Methodist cruises 9-0 in final conference match
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team clinched their sixth straight conference title with a 9-0 victory over visiting Peace College on Tuesday.  First year head coach Francie Barragan now looks to take the team to national tournament for the first time since 2002. release

Monarchs sneak past CNU, bury Ferrum
Methodist remains undefeated in conference
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team won their seventh and eighth consecutive matches as they snuck past Christopher Newport on Saturday and easily handled Ferrum on Sunday.  Both matches took place at Methodist. The victories improve Methodist to 12-3 overall, and 6-0 in USA South play. release

Methodist win sixth straight match in convincing fashion
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team won their sixth consecutive match as they rolled in a 8-1 decision over conference foe Greensboro College. The victory improves Methodist to 10-3 overall. release

Methodist wins all nine matches on the road
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team won their fifth consecutive match as they rolled in a 9-0 decision over conference foe Shenandoah University (5-4). The victory improves Methodist to 9-3 overall.  The Lady Monarchs swept all six singles matches as Jenny Smith (No.1), Tiffany Tucker (No.2), Leighton Bull (No.3), Julie Angrick (No.4) and Lauren Hulse (No.5) were each victorious. Tucker swept her match 6-0, 6-0 and the Monarchs combined to win 52 of the 60 singles games. release

Methodist sweeps singles matches to improve to 8-3 overall
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Make it four straight victories for the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s team as they pulled off a 7-2 decision over visiting NCAA Division II Coker on Sunday at Monarch Courts. The victory improves Methodist to 8-3 overall. The Lady Monarchs swept all six singles matches as Jenny Smith (No.1), Tiffany Tucker (No.2), Leighton Bull (No.3), Julie Angrick (No.4), Lauren Hulse (No.5) and Shannon Vivian (No.6) were each victorious. release

Methodist wins third straight, improves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in USA South
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Playing their first USA South Athletic Conference match in nearly a month, the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team cruised to an impressive 9-0 victory over visiting Averett on Saturday at Monarch Courts. The victory was the third straight for Methodist, which improves to 7-3 overall and remains undefeated in the USA South at 2-0. Methodist swept the six singles matches, winning each in straight sets. In fact, three Lady Monarchs won without losing games. release

Methodist improves to 6-3 overall with key Atlantic South Regional victory
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team made it two straight victories on Thursday, winning a key 8-1 showdown at in-state rival Meredith. The victory improves Methodist to 6-3 overall. The Lady Monarchs swept all six singles matches, but not without plenty of dramatics. Jenny Smith (No.2), Leighton Bull (No.3) and Julie Angrick (No.4) each needed three sets to prevail. release

Re-charged Lady Monarchs mow down St. Andrews 9-0
Methodist ends three-match losing skid, improves to 5-3 overall
LAURINBURG, N.C. – The week off appeared to re-charge the batteries of the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team. On Monday, the Monarchs rolled to a 9-0 shutout victory at neighboring NCAA Division II rival St. Andrews. The victory ends a three-match losing streak for Methodist, which improves to 5-3 overall. release

Methodist now 4-3 overall following “Beltway” weekend
CHESTERFIELD, Md. – The Methodist Lady Monarchs concluded their “Beltway Tour” on Monday, dropping a 9-0 decision at Washington College. The defeat, the third straight for the Lady Monarchs, drops Methodist to 4-3 overall on the season. release

Lady Monarchs drop second straight, 8-1 against Johns Hopkins
Tucker, Bull capture lone Methodist victory in doubles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team dropped its second straight match, this time an 8-1 decision on Sunday against Johns Hopkins at Washington College’s Schottland Tennis Pavilion. Methodist’s lone victory was at No. 1 doubles as the team of Leighton Bull and Tiffany Tucker defeated Brittany Mataua and Tonya Gulnick 8-4. release

Lady Monarchs suffer first defeat of 2006 season
Tucker, Vivian win in singles as Methodist falls 6-3 at Salisbury
SALISBURY, Md. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team suffered is first defeat of the season on Saturday, dropping a 6-34 decision at Salisbury. The defeat makes Methodist 4-1 overall on the season.
Methodist won twice in singles and once in doubles. Tiffany Tucker won a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Jen Rosler at No. 2 singles, while Shannon Vivian prevailed 6-2, 6-2 against Robyn Wendell at No. 5 singles. release

Lady Monarchs’ Smith selected USA South Player of the Week for women’s tennis
Junior starts 2006 season on a 3-1 start in singles and 2-0 in doubles
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The USA South Athletic Conference released its first weekly honors for women’s tennis on Monday, and the Methodist Lady Monarchs were a part of the first week of awards. The Lady Monarchs’ Jenny Smith was selected USA South Player of the Week. A junior from High Point, N.C., Smith is off to fast start in the 2006 season for Methodist and first-year head coach Francie Barragan, posting a 3-1 record in singles and a 2-0 mark in doubles. release

Methodist drops only two games in singles, two games in doubles
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist Lady Monarch women’s team opened defense of its USA South Athletic Conference championship on Thursday with a 9-0 victory over visiting North Carolina Wesleyan at the Monarch Courts. The Lady Monarchs remain undefeated on the season at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the USA South. Methodist lost only two game in singles play and two games in doubles action. release

Methodist stays undefeated at 3-0 in women’s tennis
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite some frigid playing conditions, the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s tennis team continued its winning ways on Sunday, winning 9-0 at both Winston-Salem State and at Salem. The sweep makes Methodist 3-0 on the 2006 season. release

Lady Monarchs rally with three straight victories in doubles over local rival
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Francie Barragan era started on a winning note for the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s team as the Lady Monarchs rallied for a 5-4 victory on Sunday at local Division II rival Fayetteville State. It marked the first victory in the debut for Barragan in her initial season as Lady Monarch head coach. release

Methodist picked first in USA South preseason women’s tennis poll
Lady Monarchs open Barragan era on Feb. 11 at Fayetteville State
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The USA South Athletic Conference released its 2006 preseason poll for women’s tennis on Wednesday, and the Methodist Lady Monarchs were selected as the preseason favorite in the eight-team race. Methodist received 49 points and seven first-place votes, out-distancing second place Christopher Newport with 41 points and one first-place vote. The Lady Monarchs open the 2006 season - the first for new head coach Francie Barragan - On Feb. 11 at neighboring rival Fayetteville State. release

Barragan hired as Methodist head women’s tennis coach
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – At the same time that Methodist is hiring its new women’s head tennis coach, Francie Barragan is coming home. A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Barragan was officially appointed on Monday as the new women’s head tennis coach, Methodist Athletic Director Bob McEvoy announced. Barragan replaces Kelly Callahan, who posted a 24-8 record in two seasons at Methodist with two straight USA South Athletic Conference championships. release
