April 29, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Methodist women's tennis team received its second consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament after claiming the USA South Tournament Championship just over a week ago. The NCAA announced the 2008 Division III bracket on Monday night sending the Monarchs to Mary Washington to face Elizabethtown College on Friday at 1 pm. Methodist heads to Fredericksburg with a 20-3 overall record this season, the most wins in Methodist women's tennis history. The team is coming off of a 7-2 win in the USA South Championship match against Christopher Newport and carries a 14-match winning streak into the NCAA Tournament. Last season the Monarchs won their first round match over Principia before falling to Sewanee in the second round. Elizabethtown is 13-3 overall and earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA team championships with a 5-0 victory over Lebanon Valley College in the Commonwealth Conference finals on April 20. The only common opponent for the two teams is Meredith College. Elizabethtown took a 4-5 loss in early March after a rain delay while Methodist won 7-2 over Meredith on Mar. 27. The winner of Methodist/Elizabethtown will face sixth seeded Mary Washington on Saturday at 1 pm. Photo by John Flaherty |
