Champion Awarded Faculty Emeritus Status

Methodist University’s Board of Trustees recently awarded Darl H. Champion Sr. Faculty Emeritus status. Champion, who helped establish the University’s Criminal Justice Program and Masters of Justice Administration, retired in December 2018 as a tenured professor within the School of Public Affairs.

“It is only fitting to honor Dr. Champion with the Faculty Emeritus distinction, the pinnacle of faculty service at Methodist University,” said George Hendricks, Dean of Methodist University’s School of Public Affairs. “Darl is true green and gold. He devoted the last 26 years in selfless service to Methodist University. Darl is a skilled and caring teacher, an active community and campus leader, and a Criminal Justice scholar.”

Champion earned his master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina and a doctorate in adult education with a minor in public administration from North Carolina State University. In 2004 he was named Professor of the Year at Methodist University. He served 10 years as a member of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

“Dr. Champion leaves a lasting legacy of service to Methodist University that will remain strong for many years to come,” Hendricks said. “I am honored to call Darl a colleague and friend. I have the highest admiration for his work and his commitment to our institution.”
