Methodist University Announces New Director of Police and Public Safety

Methodist University has recently named Mark Brewington as the Director of Police and Public Safety, and Chief of Police.

Brewington served as deputy sheriff at the Cumberland County Sheriff’s office from 1986-1992, during which he completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training at Fayetteville Technical Community College. He next worked for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for 23 years, most recently as the assistant director of the Administrative Services Division.

“One of the University’s highest priorities is the safety and wellbeing of the members of the campus community,” said Dr. Ben Hancock, president of Methodist University. “A key to our success in meeting this priority is to attract the very best professionals to lead our campus safety efforts. We are fortunate to have someone of Chief Brewington’s experience and credentials to head up this important area.”

Brewington is a certified law enforcement instructor, certified firearms instructor, and a court certified expert in the field of arson investigations. He received the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces Program’s OCDETF Of The Year award in 1999, and was the United States Department of Justice OCDETF of the Year award winner for the Eastern District of North Carolina in 2008. Additionally, Brewington has developed and implemented multiple training programs for law enforcement agencies.

“Chief Brewington brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with him,” said William Walker, vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students. “We look forward to his leadership and guidance in safety and law enforcement.”
