The Methodist University Physician Assistant program was awarded a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant of $1.59 million over a four-year period. The grant program provides funds to eligible accredited U.S. health professions schools to make scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have financial need and are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as full time students.
“Graduate school is an investment, and funding can be a limiting factor for some,” said Christina Beard, Director of the Methodist University PA Program. “The PA Programs thanks HRSA for the opportunity to make PA school an option for more underrepresented minorities and/or students who are from an economically or environmentally disadvantaged background. We are looking forward to working with all scholarship recipients to educate them on becoming excellent PAs so that they may expand healthcare offerings in their communities and beyond.”
Methodist University is one of five North Carolina schools to be awarded the HRSA grant. Scholarship recipients selected by the PA Program will receive a total of $60,000.
“This major grant is just the latest indication of the level of support Methodist University is receiving in support of our Health Science initiatives,” said Dr. Ben Hancock, Methodist University President. “It will enable us to attract the most talented students and prepare them to meet the health care needs of all citizens of North Carolina, especially the underserved population that has always been a priority of our PA program.”
The Physician Assistant Program will begin awarding grants to students who are part of the incoming Fall 2016 class.
