I came to Methodist to play basketball
and study biology to become a forensic pathologist. As a freshman,
I was very shy. The community I found in my residence hall opened
me up as a person. I was surrounded by people who
knew me and from that I found myself. After basketball practice,
people would come up to my room to enjoy my music. I started off
playing the lead guitar and now I play cello, violin and drums.
My favorite styles are R&B and 1950s doo-wop.
People really liked what I did, and I realized that I enjoyed studying
biology, but it wasn’t what I love. I love music, and I love
business. I started writing songs. I’ve had my work performed
by “One Spirit” (MU’s vocal ensemble) and the
jazz band. Watching that performance was like watching my children
on the stage doing what they’ve been taught. I also got recording
equipment. Now I offer local artists and artists on campus with
low budgets marketing solutions for their acts and recording for
their music. My goal is to own a recording company.
This residence hall community helped me come into my own. For freshmen,
it’s instant community. The friendships I developed have empowered
me. I like it on campus. I like my roommate. I like that I can walk
to class. And the food just gets better every year. This is a place
I like calling home.
