A Brief History of the Program

In 1994 the Methodist University (then Methodist College)
faculty and Board of Trustees voted to develop a Bachelor
of Science Physician Assistant Program at Methodist University.
The Program received its provisional accreditation from
the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education
Programs in April 1996, admitted its first class in May
1996, received full accreditation on October 1998, and graduated
its first physician assistant class in May 1998. In April
2000 the faculty and Board of Trustees voted to approve
the transition of the PA Program from a bachelor’s
level to a master’s level program and admitted its
first class August 2001.
The program received its continuing accreditation from
the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the
Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA)
in September 2007, and will be reviewed again in 2012. Methodist
University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of
the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane,
Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097. Telephone number 404-679-4501)
to award master's and baccalaureate degrees.
Methodist University continued to run a dual program at
the bachelor's and master's level through the Fall of 2003.
Our last incomimg bachelor's class was the Fall of 2003.
Our first master’s degree students graduated in December
2003.
The program is 27 months in length and confers the Master
of Medical Science (M.M.S.) degree.
