The
tennis community for PTM student’s involvement is very broad.
During the academic year, there are a wide variety of tennis activities
offering the PTM students opportunities for participation. In September,
this means USTA Collegiate Team Tennis. The University has a club
team along with 15 other collegiate teams at colleges and universities
across North Carolina. The season starts with the Fall Brawl at
University of North Carolina in Charlotte. This is the club team
(right) getting back to campus from a successful weekend of tennis.
Also in September, clubs and resorts in the area permit
PTM students to use their tennis facilities. This gives
their members and guest the opportunity to see aspiring
tennis teaching professionals in action. As employers they
have the opportunity so see who may be hired for internships
or upon graduation. Here are PTM students at Highland Country
Club in Fayetteville on clay courts (left) and at Pine Needles
Resort in Southern Pines on grass courts.
| In October, the PTM program sponsors the
Methodist University Women’s Invitational. PTM
students’ help run the 2 day round robin tennis
tournament. 4 women’s teams from colleges and
universities in the area along with the University team
competed. Here is the flier
for the event and a picture of the doubles champs along
with PTM students. |

In October, and again in March, PTM students host
tennis clinics to introduce 4th graders from a local
elementary school to the game of tennis. Using noon
hours over 3 days, PTM students host over 150 students
from Long Hill Elementary School. At right are the
4th graders, teachers, and PTM students during a break. |

| In November, PTM students start the month with hosting
the GAMMA Rotary Futures Tennis Tournament. “Futures”
is the word the USTA in North Carolina uses for novice
tournaments, which help grow the game of tennis. The
age divisions are 10 – 18. Here is the champion
and finalist for the girls 12’s along with PTM
students. |
 |
| Then November ends with a member/guest team tennis
event. The guests are faculty and members of a local
country club. PTM student Rob Currier wanted the event
named after him so he sponsored the t-shirts for the
Currier Cup. This is the group after the event. |
 |
| In February, PTM students host member of Kings Grant
Golf and Country Club to tennis clinics to introduce
them to tennis. This is a family oriented event with
parents and children participating. The age range is
from 4 years old and up. |
 |
| In February, the Professional Tennis Registry hosts
its’ International Symposium. The Professional
Tennis Registry (PTR) headquarters is on Hilton Head
Island, South Carolina. PTM students attend and really
enjoy the Trade Show. Here are some PTM students at
the HAR TRU booth. HAR TRU is the world’s largest
supplier of matrial for clay/soft tennis courts. |
 |
| In March, PTM students in the Tournament Administration
class, PTM #120, organize and run the GAMMA Futures
Tennis Tournament. The age divisions are from 10 –
18. This is another “grow the game” event. |
 |
| In April is the USA South Conference Tennis Tournament.
Everybody goes. Parents and alumni attend. It is 2 days
of great tennis and family support. The women’s
and men’s teams also do very well every year. |
