Student Consultant Program

Student Consultant Program

The Writing Center student consultant walk-in program allows excellent student writers to become walk-in consultants. Students are trained and supervised before independently consulting and joining the Writing Center staff as employees.

To qualify, students must

  • Have completed English 1010 and English 1020 with a grade of “B” or better
  • Complete a Saturday, six-hour training class (after which each student receives a “Certificate of Completion” that will be documented on that student’s co-curricular transcript)
  • Perform well on a comprehensive grammar exam and on an editing exam (that tests the student’s ability to identify higher and lower order skill deficiencies)
  • Participate in a shadowing apprenticeship experience with professional consultants
  • Complete two supervised consultations

Program benefits include

  • A professional on-campus experience for excellent student writers
  • A paid experience
  • The development of marketable writing and customer service skills
  • An excellent work environment with writing professionals
  • Ongoing professional development
  • An opportunity to make a difference in the academic lives of fellow students
  • An undergraduate experience that may qualify students for graduate teaching assistantships or for work  at other writing centers
