The Programs
Theatre at Methodist University has two basic components, the production
program and the academic program.
Students can participate in one or the other or both, depending
on their level of commitment.
Productions
Everyone at Methodist can participate – it doesn’t
matter what your major is. Much of our best work has been put on
by Political Science majors, English majors, Biology majors, Communications
majors, even faculty.
Some large-scale productions are open to the community; however,
Methodist University students always get priority.
We produce four shows a year: a musical in the spring, a children’s
production in November, and two other shows – one in October,
one in April – which are often student-generated projects.
We use two primary facilities, Reeves Auditorium and O’Hanlon
Amphitheatre. We also occasionally use “found” space
like the front porch of the Mallett-Rogers House or the courtyard
of the Trustees Building.
Academics
We prepare students for entry-level positions in Theatre production
companies, as well as for further graduate-level study.
The program is designed for self-motivated individuals who are
interested in creating their own opportunities as well as well as
making the most of what is already in the program.
We also see a major part of our mission as preparing the audience
to be an informed consumer of quality theatre. We encourage students
to take advantage of local opportunities, such as Cape
Fear Regional Theatre in Fayetteville, Temple
Theatre in Sanford, Sandhills Theatre
Company in Southern Pines, as well as the many professional
, college and community theatre productions within driving distance
in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, or Wilmington.
