White Coat Ceremonies have been an important rite of passage at medical schools for more than 20 years. In 2014, the Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF) partnered with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), to develop a similar event at schools of nursing. Methodist University was one of 100 schools chosen nationwide to pilot this initiative; only two schools in North Carolina were chosen. During the ceremony, junior nursing students are presented with their white lab coats by Methodist University nursing faculty. The cloaking, as it is called, is a symbolic gesture which represents the commitment students are accepting to provide humanistic, patient-centered care. Students also recite an oath and are addressed by an eminent role model.

Each year, on the Thursday before Spring Commencement, Methodist University Department of Nursing holds its Nursing Pinning Ceremony. The pinning ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition which is often more personally meaningful than the graduation ceremony. It signifies the nursing graduate’s official initiation into the brotherhood and sisterhood of nurses. While the history of the first pinning ceremonies can be traced back to the Crusades of the 12th century, the modern ceremony dates back to the 1860’s when Florence Nightingale was awarded the Red Cross of St. George in recognition for her tireless service to the injured during the Crimean War. By 1916, the practice of pinning new nursing graduates was standard throughout the U.S. The inaugural pinning ceremony for Methodist University’s first class of nursing graduates was held in May of 2014.
