Student Organizations & Activities

Methodist University is providing meaningful, high quality out-of-class opportunities by redesigning and engaging events and programs that fosters establishing healthy relationships, leadership development, and participation in student clubs and organization.

Clubs & Organizations

Student clubs and organizations are reimagining events, programs, and meetings by using safe physical distancing practices and virtual options for larger group gatherings and for students who are unable to participate in person.

The Student Involvement Center is providing trainings for student leaders on how to observe physical distancing guidelines, encourage face masks to be worn and hold meetings virtually when appropriate. Clear and standard practices are given to student clubs and organizations of different sizes so that students know, in advance, how to manage their meetings and operate their organizations.

Student Activity Events

The Student Activities Committee (SAC) offers late night programs. They have made special considerations when choosing dates and locations to allow for smaller events to include physical distancing and wearing of masks. SAC offers weekly virtual and in-person programs for student’s entertainment.

Berns Student Center

Berns Student Center is the central hub for student connection at Methodist University. This fall the Berns is open seven days a week and offers a variety of services for students with modifications. Modifications include the following-

  • Reducing seating options in common spaces, offices, and event spaces.
  • Altering space and traffic flow patterns to enforce physically distancing while still supporting the student experience and office operational needs.
  • Reevaluating entrances and exits throughout the building to take into consideration traffic flow and queuing constraints.
  • Encouraging students, faculty, staff, and guest to wear a mask at all times throughout the building.
  • Sanitizing and disinfecting recreational equipment.

Campus Recreation & Nimocks Fitness Center

Current Hours of operation

  • Monday – Thursday: 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Friday: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Saturday – Sunday: Noon – 5 p.m.

Occupancy

15 (Upon capacity, the front doors will be locked and MU community members will be let in when a person exits.)

Workout Times/Signups

MU community members are encouraged to sign up for 50-minute time slots starting at the beginning of each hour. Signups guarantee a workout time. Signups are limited to one 50-minute block/day. Click here to sign up for a workout time.

Walk-Ins

If space is available, Nimocks Fitness Center staff will allow walk-ins. However, walk-ins must observe the same 50-minute time slot (i.e., If a walk-in comes at 8:20 a.m., they will have 35 minutes to complete their workout).

Cleaning

Nimocks Fitness Center staff will conduct daily deep cleanings at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., 7 p.m., and 10 p.m. During these times, workouts will not be permitted.

Fitness Center Protocol

  • A face covering must be worn at all times. If you forget your face covering, we have a limited number of face coverings for giveaway.
  • Please observe all signs for entrances and exits.
    • Enter only through the front door of the fitness center.
    • You may exit through the front entrance or through the side entrance to the gravel parking lot.
  • We ask that you observe social distancing by using every other piece of equipment. If a machine or piece of equipment is in use, either wait to use the machine beside that person or use the machine two spaces over.
  • Partitions have been put in place to help with social distancing.
  • Please wipe down equipment before and after use. Sanitizing wipes have been placed throughout the fitness center.
  • Please keep your hands clean. Hand-sanitizing stations have been placed throughout the fitness center.
  • Please bring a water bottle. Water fountains are bottle-fill stations. We have limited amount of water bottles for giveaway if you don’t have one.
  • At this time, there will be no competitive basketball, volleyball or other competitive sports allowed on the gym floor. When playing basketball, no more than two people per goal will be allowed.

Bathrooms/locker room

Bathrooms are limited to 4-6 people at a time to create proper social distancing and only one shower will be in operation in each bathroom/locker room.

Equipment Checkout

Equipment checkout is limited.  Upon returning checked out equipment, it will be cleaned by Campus Recreation staff before reissuing the equipment.

Spotting

At this time no spotting will be allowed to reduce the risk of transmission.  Please lift weights that you are capable of handling alone.
