A first-generation classical musician, Winifred Garrett is the principal harpist for the Fayetteville Symphony, harpist-in-residence at the Hayti Heritage Center, and “High Tea Harpist” for the Five Star/Five Diamond Umstead Hotel and Spa. A native of North Carolina, a graduate of the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts, and a recipient of a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, Garrett’s expansive and eclectic freelance career includes performances with the North Carolina Symphony, the North Carolina Theater, the Hickory Choral Society, Carolina Ballet, and Long Leaf Opera, of which she was principal harpist.

During her 16 years in New York, Garrett performed with Stevie Wonder at the Metropolitan Opera House, Marvin Gaye at Radio City Music Hall, and Tony Bennett. Additional New York highlights include performances with the Harlem Boys Choir, the Harlem Girls Choir, Dance Theater of Harlem, and the Universal Symphony. Possessing an extensive musical theater repertoire, Garrett was chosen by the Broadway team of Jones and Schmidt to serve as harpist for the first Japan tour of the off-Broadway show, “The Fantasticks” and played the Sullivan Street Playhouse production for four years. Other Broadway and regional theater performances include “The Christmas Spectacular” at Radio City Music Hall starring The Rockettes and “Sweeney Todd ” starring George Hearn at the Papermill Playhouse Theater. Her film credits include “Mo Better Blues” and “School Daze” directed by Spike Lee. Garrett is adjunct professor of harp at North Carolina State University and Guilford College.
