Classifications of Employees

  • An employee eligible for the University benefit program is considered full-time for the MUP Scholarship.
  • An employee who regularly works 20 hours or less per week is considered a part-time employee.

Application Guidelines

  • If the MUP Scholarship applicant does NOT already have a four-year Bachelor’s Degree, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) MUST be completed each academic year. A copy of dependent student birth certificate MUST be provided to the Office of Financial Aid. MUP form MUST be completed 30 days prior to the start of each semester. A copy of the MUP form MUST be on file in the Financial Aid Office before PENDING MUP scholarship can be offered. ALL FINANCIAL AID RECEIVED (Federal, State and Outside Scholarships) will be applied towards the tuition and WILL reduce the amount of the MUP Scholarship.
  • If the MUP Scholarship applicant is the employee or spouse and is selected for verification by the Federal Government, all verification documentation must be completed by the MUP Scholarship applicant and verified by the office of Financial Aid before the MUP Scholarship application will be signed by a representative of the Financial Aid office.
  • All dependent MUP Scholarship applicants MUST provide a copy of their birth certificate. If applicant/dependent student is selected for verification, all verification documentation MUST be completed by the applicant and verified by the office of Financial Aid before the MUP Scholarship application form will be signed by a representative of the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) must be maintained in order to qualify for the MUP Scholarship.
  • The MUP Scholarship Application must be completed, signed by the Office of Financial Aid and returned (all copies) to the Personnel Office 30 days prior to the start of the semester to be permitted to register for MUP courses.
  • A separate MUP Scholarship Application form must be completed for the fall, spring and summer terms. MUP Scholarship approvals are made on a semester by semester basis and the individual must meet all requirements.
  • If the MUP Scholarship applicant has acquired enough credits to receive a 4 year degree, they will no longer be eligible for MUP Scholarship as an undergraduate student (without a Baccalaureate degree).
  • If the MUP Scholarship applicant Defaults on a Federal Direct Loan with Methodist University, they will forfeit the MUP Scholarship benefit.
  • NO MUP FORM will be signed by the Office of Financial Aid for any PRIOR semesters.

How the MUP Scholarship is Processed and Offered

  • During the first week of class for the semester/term, the Human Resources Office will complete the Human Resources section of the applications and forward them to the Vice President for Business Affairs for approval. Approved applications will then be forwarded to the Financial Aid Office.
  • After the semester/term has ended and the final grades have been turned in, the Financial Aid Office will begin to process  the MUP Scholarship. (see Grades Policy, below)
  • The Financial Aid Office will then send the scholarship amount to the Office of Student Accounts so that the student’s account may be credited. If the student has applied for student loans, and as a result, the MUP Scholarship amount creates a credit balance on the student’s account, the Student Accounts will process refunds checks accordingly.

Grades & Withdrawal Policy

  • All individuals who have applied for the MUP Scholarship must complete the course with a grade “D-” or better in order to receive the MUP Scholarship for the course(s). MUP Scholarship will NOT cover WF, F or I (incomplete) grades.
  • To avoid incurring tuition charges, any student attempting to withdraw from an MUP Scholarship covered course must receive permission from his or her supervisor (if applicable) AND the Academic Dean (applies to all MUP Scholarship recipients.) This permission must be granted prior to the withdrawal of the course. The “Permission to Withdraw Form from an MUP-Covered Course” form must be used to document permission to withdraw and is available in the Registrar’s Office and the Personnel Office. The employee/dependent is responsible for any tuition charges that are assessed due to the withdrawal of a course unless permission to withdraw from the course has been granted by the supervisor and the Academic Dean prior to withdraw. A copy of the permission to withdraw from an MUP course MUST be provided to the Office of Financial Aid once approved by the Academic Dean.
  • If a course is completed with a failing grade, a grade WF, or an incomplete, the employee/dependent will be responsible for the tuition charge for the course. If the failing grade, grade WF or incomplete changes to a passing grade within the following semester, MUP Scholarship will cover the class.

Failure to reimburse the University could result in the individual not being permitted to further enroll in courses until the amount owed has been collected. The University will take action to collect any unpaid accounts per current Business Office policies.

Important Note: The MUP Scholarship covers normal tuition costs; it does not cover fees or other charges (books/room/board), or “other course fees.”
