With nearly 40 NCAA golf national titles – and one of only 18 universities that offer a PGA Golf Management (PGM) program across the nation – Methodist University is certainly in a class of its own. But this week’s summer camp gave nearly a dozen rising high school juniors and seniors an idea of why it’s such an elite program.

Methodist University’s PGM Summer Experience (July 10-13) welcomed nine prospective students from around the country to the University’s sprawling 617-acre campus. Not only did they receive one-on-one golf instruction from expert University staff, but they even played several rounds of golf at MU’s private, on-campus, 18-hole Downback Golf Course.

More importantly though, the camp gave a one-of-a-kind look at the University’s PGA Golf Management program. Campers engaged in team-building activities, sampled key courses within the program, and even received enrollment information in case they were interested in taking the next steps to becoming a Monarch.

“This week is about giving our prospective students an idea of what life is like as a college student, and more specifically as a PGM student,” said Anthony Panepento ‘21, director of recruiting for MU’s PGA Golf Management program. “The PGM Summer Experience is particularly special to me because it’s the reason I’m here today. I came to the PGM Summer Experience when I was a high school student, and it led me to Methodist University as a PGM student and now as a member of the staff.”

Some other key aspects of the camp including students living in the University’s many residence halls, eating meals at the Green & Gold dining hall, and taking a tour of the entire campus. But if you asked any of the nine golfers, they would tell you the University’s private golf course on campus is one of the main reasons they are considering MU for their next stop in education.

“I’m really interested in the PGM program at Methodist University. What has stood out to me so far has been the practice facility and the fact that there’s a private golf course on campus. I’ve visited a few other universities where we had to drive off campus to a golf course. But this is the first one where it’s right on campus,” said Anna Wicklum from Augusta, Ga.

The University’s PGA Golf Management program can graduate students with a bachelor’s degree in several majors including Marketing, Business Administration, Financial Economics, and Accounting. Each graduate is required to complete approved internships totaling 16 months at a golf industry. Better yet, the program has a 100-percent job placement and showcases the largest PGM staff out of the 18 accredited programs in the nation.
