United States Court of Appeals Judge Robert B. King will address this year’s graduates at Methodist University’s 56th annual Spring Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. in the Crown Coliseum.
United States Court of Appeals Judge Robert B. King will address this year’s graduates at Methodist University’s 56th annual Spring Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. in the Crown Coliseum. There are currently 283 candidates for graduation.
As part of the ceremony, the University will confer an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Judge King, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1998. King sits on the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Va. In his 21 years on the court, he has authored hundreds of opinions, many of which address complex constitutional and criminal law issues.
The ceremony also will include the commissioning of ROTC cadets and a speech by this year’s Distinguished Graduate, Lindsey Pritchard, who was elected by the graduating seniors. One student also will be presented with the Lucius Stacy Weaver Award, which was established in 1964 in honor of the University’s first President. The award recognizes academic excellence, spiritual development, leadership and service.
Following the MU tradition for a student who is the first MU graduate from his or her country, Safar “Adam” Kurbansho will present the flag of Tajikistan, Tehillah Chinunga will present the flag of Malawi, and Oxie Itoua will present the flag of the Republic of Congo.
The Rev. Dr. Judy Chung, executive director of missionary service of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, will deliver the Baccalaureate address at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 3, in Matthews Chapel in the Matthews Ministry Center.
